Welcome to my first Newsletter

I'm researching and writing about love and the role that it could or should play in our organisations. In my leadership development and coaching work, I see that many organisations are loveless places where people are fearful, anxious and stressed. I'm not ok with that. And I believe that love is the strong medicine that is needed for tough times.

So we need to develop a deep and new understanding of what love means, what it looks like and how we cultivate it. We need a way of seeing love as practical and useful for these tricky times we're in. We also need to be bold in doing that.

This Newsletter shares a little of what I'm researching, learning, thinking and writing about, as well as details of upcoming events that I'm running or speaking at. I hope you enjoy it and find stimulation and interest here.

Leadership & Love Research
I was recently thrilled to learn that my research into Love & Leadership won the 2019 Roffey Park Research competition. The research report was published in October.

If you would like to see a copy let me know and I can send it to you. In the meantime, here is the earlier version it was based upon.
I asked 76 leaders across the public and private sectors in organisations big and small, what it would be like if there was more love in our organisations. It brought up some interesting responses, not least that love is a deeply problematic topic to be exploring.

The Case against Love
Around 30% of my respondents indicated that love was really difficult to talk about. Someone even told me the other day that it was plain wrong to bring love into the workplace. I can't find a way to agree with that but I do see that it's problematic and not straightforward whether from societal norms or our personal social histories...

Actor, Kenneth Williams once said that, "love is the most awful invasion of privacy" and I get that. I write about it in my Blog and it will, no doubt be a continuing theme of my
writing.

'Leading with Love' Podcast
Chris Janzen, of The Ignition Show podcast invited me onto his show to talk about my exploration of Love.

It was my first podcast and I was so impressed by the way Chris set me up for success and prepared me well. We talk about the messiness of emotions in working life, how I got interested in love in the first place and what we can do to help people connect with more love at work.
Also an interesting thing about the way Chris works, is that after each interview, he and his wife Sarah talk about their own responses to the interview and see how the themes might resonate in their life and work.

Listen to the podcast here now, or you can listen to the podcast AfterShow conversation here...

I'm loving the prep for this event as it's making me challenge my own thinking about OD and what it's for and I'm looking forward to sharing that with you.

There are just a few places left but you can still book here.

Leadership & Love: 15th November 2019

On 15th November in Brighton, if you can't make the event on the 4th of November, as part of the Meaning Conference Fringe, a workshop for leaders and others who want to shape their organisational culture. For anyone who finds the idea of love in the workplace strange or just plain wrong.

For those of you who are intrigued at the idea of new and bold approaches to help with tough times. In it we will find the courage to get more comfortable talking about love.

There's still some places left and you can book here.

Let's Connect
If the idea of love in organisations interests you, come and explore it with me. We could run a session for your team on the role love might play in your organisation - or run my 'Leading from Love' survey in your organisation. You might welcome a 1:1 session to explore your owen relationship with love. Or take part in one of my Action Inquiry groups, exploring love in the workplace. Whatever, please do get in touch as I'd welcome the chance to explore this with you further.

Beyond that my leadership development work is all about conversations and relationships. Whether you're interested in finding out more about my work, want to know about some good books on leadership, teams or share your own experiences of developing leadership, it would be good to hear from you. I'm social too so you can follow me on Twitter and LinkedIn or connect via email. Alternatively you can pick up the phone and call me of course, whichever suits. I'd love to be in touch with you because who knows where a connection might lead.
